A SMART APPROACH TO FIT + HEALTHY LIVING

Hitting The Gym

Yesterday I took a big step and signed up for a pay-monthly membership with my local leisure centre. When I am officially a student in September, I may switch to annual payment as it will work out quite a lot cheaper! I'm currently paying around £30 a month for their Premier Plus 'all inclusive' package which includes unlimited use of the gym, all group exercise classes, swimming pool, racquet sports, sauna and steam room.

The main things that I want to take advantage of are the group exercise classes such as Zumba, Spinning and Pilates. I also want to use the gym for a more targetted work out.

My main reasons for joining the gym:
1. Health. This will always be the more important reason and main driving force behind my exercising. I have Cystic Fibrosis so maintaining a high lung function and stable weight is crucial.
2. Body. To be completely honest, I just want to look in shape. As I have mentioned previously, strong is the new skinny and I want to look toned and lean with defined curves.
3. Motivation. You may be thinking that surely I will need motivation to even get started but I want to get to the point where it's habit.

Today, I went back for a one-to-one session with a member of the fitness suite who completed a brief assessment with me and guided me through a personalised workout plan.

The assessment was essentially an impersonal, standard computer based questionnaire. To be honest I could have told him exactly why I was there and what I wanted to achieve in a much shorter time period but anyway, here are my results in an 'Aspiration Map':

To be honest, this doesn't mean a lot to me but I suppose it sums up the fact that I want to improve my fitness and performance and tone up as opposed to wanting to only manage my weight or de-stress.

This 'aspiration map' is powered by Technogym who supply the gym with its high-end equipment. I, like all gym users, have an individual Technogym 'key' with which I can sign onto a computer system to monitor my progress and view my training plan. I insert it into every piece of equipment that I use so that my workout data can be recorded. It also sets up each piece of equpiment for me with a pre-set time/number of reps and speed/suggested weight and tells me what to move onto after completing each set.

It's well worth checking out the Technogym Website as it has lots of interesting articles on exercise and nutrition in the Wellbeing section.

I'll keep you posted on my progress!
